Courageous Moms Who Went Viral
Suddenly the earth shook. People waited for it to end quickly but it continued. Even at the San Diego zoo. Instinctively, the mama elephants formed an “ alert circle” facing outward while the baby elephants went in the middle of the herd. They knew that their greatest protection for their young was when they were together, supporting one another. The quake ended and the elephants went back to their normal routine. The babies were safe. Last weekend I experienced something similar when my besties of 53+ years gathered together for our annual girls weekend in San Diego. We asked the question “ what is one thing you didn't know about each other”? After many years we did have some secrets…and as they say “ what’s shared with besties stays with besties”! But, one thing became very clear to me; these were courageous mamas and grandmas. Each of us had chosen a different path than our own moms, resulting in a more hands on, intimate relationship with our kids. Like many moms, it takes courage to stand up and speak truth, to set healthy boundaries, to say no when it would be easier to say yes, to walk away from an abusive spouse in order to protect the children, to choose to give up their child for adoption in order for them to have a better life, to fight evil and injustice on our knees to God…and when it’s time, to let our kids go their own way. Like the mama elephants who banned together to protect their kids, so have I found that with other moms, like my besties, our greatest strength is found in God and in each others support. As they say, it takes a village to raise a child. So, for all the moms and grandmas who have courageously raised their children in the best way they could, THANK YOU! May God give you favor and blessings for all that you have sacrificed and the many years that you have spent on your knees for your children. Happy Mothers Day!
