THE MAN AND HIS BIBLE

It was standing room only. People traveled far and wide to be there. Some were dressed in their work clothes, others in black. Drew greeted those that came and thanked them for being there. Tissues were available at the end of each row. As we found our seats, the room became quiet. Though still in disbelief, we all came for one reason- to celebrate the life of Steve Johnson. Josh, a co-worker from Mygrant, spoke first. As Vice President of Operations nationwide, many texted Drew and Josh what Steve had done for them, the impact he made in their lives, quietly, modestly, with no fanfare. Tears. As some of Steve’s family members came forward, sharing the love, guidance, example, of him as a husband, father, grandfather, you could hear more soft crying. But then the video. We witnessed his humor, (lack of singing abilities), his tenderness with his grandchildren, his devotion to Kim, and his love for his dog Daisy. Finally, the pastor stood up, holding Steve’s bible. He confessed that he had been going through Steve’s bible, seeing if it was worn, what was underlined, possible notes written on the side. Wow. Many people at the celebration of Steve’s life claim to be Christians too. So, here’s the question; If you passed away, what would your pastor find in your bible? Would it be dusty or worn? If you did underline any scriptures, what would it say about your relationship with God? Not surprising, Steve’s bible was worn, with verses underlined about needing God…trusting God in all things. Steve was very successful, both professionally and personally. He was a man of integrity, who led people righteously, always willing to give people a second chance. Sometimes he was a little bit scary as a boss ( at 6’9” who wouldn’t be intimidated) but he was always fair. At home though…Anna, his daughter in-law, shared how they would have bets during grace, how long it would take before Steve would start to cry. But, as the pastor went on to share, it was the man and his bible, that shaped him to be the Steve we all loved and admired. He KNEW he needed God, and for that reason, he was a man of true humility, who walked side by side with His Lord Jesus. By God’s grace, he is in his eternal home, with no more suffering…just JOY. May we all follow Steve’s example, living with worn bibles, underlined scripture of needing God…and reflecting Jesus in all we do. Until we see you again Steve…thank you.
