STEP ASIDE

So the question is this “ how many Home Depot employees does it take to fix a loose cup holder on a wheelchair”? Well, this weekend we found out. Everyday I take Jake out of the house to get some exercise with the limbs that can work and to keep him from going stir crazy. That morning we went to Home Depot to get some new flowers for my patio. Jake also wanted to see if he could get something to fix his cup holder from slipping. There was one employee who was helping him so I decided to go get the flowers. About 15 minutes later I came back. As I turned the corner I heard some commotion and then saw this picture. What had been a simple task turned out to be an employee challenge! I couldn’t stop laughing. As one person thought they had the solution another one called on their radio for another person from another department to come until finally the store manager Tammy, came. And there was Jake, in the middle, in his wheelchair, trying to explain what wasn’t working. Finally, after five employees, the man in green, found the solution…yep, you guessed it…duck tape! We all laughed, Jake thanked everyone, and we went home. Last night at church I broke down and cried as a few people prayed for Kevin and I. As Bobby prayed he used the words “ step aside”, meaning allow God to do what is His purpose with Jake and the accident. But what hit me was more than that. Just like our experience at Home Depot, it took more than one person to help, and when they needed help they called for another one to help, until finally someone was able to find the solution. But Kev and I can’t do this alone…this journey with Jake is requiring so many other people, each with unique gifts, time, resources…God. And so I step aside and allow God to bring others to Jake who can help him in ways I cannot. How about you? Have you found out the resources you need is going to require the help of others? Have you asked for help? I know how difficult this can be but, as a certified control freak, some things in life can’t be handled alone…nor does God want us to do it alone. It is the reason He created people to need others…a community that reflects Him….like Jesus and His 12 disciples. When Jesus descended back to heaven He commanded ALL the disciples to go and share the good news…and He would be with them always. I am so grateful for those who have “stepped up” to help Jake, for those who have been praying daily for him, and to God, for all He is doing. I pray that if you need help, ask, pray, and step aside to see the miracles of God unfold before your very eyes. Thank you Home Depot employees for showing us what a community can do when we all work together for the good of others!
